The Archdiocesan Office of Nutritional Development Services (NDS) has been a sponsor of the School Meals programs for over forty years. In the past five years, NDS has also assisted area schools with participation in the federally-funded Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP).

Since a well-balanced diet includes filling one-half of our plate with fruits and vegetables, NDS is pleased to collaborate with several schools which have been part of the FFVP for the past several years. Longtime participating schools include: Gesu School, Pan American Charter School, and Visitation B.V.M. School.

Nutritional Development Services is pleased to announce that two additional schools will be offering students the opportunity to try a variety of produce that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to sample.

The two schools new to the program are: St. Veronica School and Spring Garden Academy. Both schools will be able to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to their students with the hope of improving children’s overall diet and creating healthier eating habits that will impact their present and future health.

“The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program not only provides students with information about the importance of eating fruits and vegetables but also provides them with the opportunity of tasting new foods,” shared Erinn Hill, Administrator of the School Meals Program at Nutritional Development Services. “It is a real hands-on nutrition education lesson.”

NDS is grateful to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for assisting us in making this important program available to schools under our sponsorship.
